If You Want To Be Happier, Check Your Beliefs!
I used to think being a dad meant I was supposed to teach you everything I know. I’m not so sure anymore. Why not? Because I’ve spent half my life unlearning what I was taught. But it’s harder to unlearn something than to learn it. All the stuff I stole from people; I stole their beliefs. I know, let’s just say I borrowed them and didn’t give them back. When you’re young you borrow all your beliefs from your parents, your friends ,you get some from school, some from TV. You stole my beliefs. In fact, by the time someone reaches your age, they’re already programmed to view the world through their parents filters.
What’s a filter?
A filter affects the way you see something. Like sunglasses. When you put on a pair of sunglasses they change the way everything looks. right? Yeah well, your beliefs are your sunglasses to the world. What you believe will determine how you see yourself and how you see the world. Do you want to know a secret? Yeah, you have to tell your sisters the world is a mirror. Yep, I have no idea what that means. Maybe it means you will see what you expect to see and you will hear what you expect to hear. I know it sounds like I’m making this up but that’s what’s up I mean when you get older.
They believe they’re right. Everything you believe is true, is true to you. But that doesn’t mean is true for others. Well, if you throw your sunglasses away, you’ll realize everything is not true. So you don’t believe anything. Beliefs to me are more like Legos I used to create my life. So say you wanted to build a blue spaceship. You’re only gonna use blue Legos, right? Yeah, well what if you realized you had different color Legos in your spaceship. They weren’t all blue.
If I find a belief running through my mind the doesn’t fit with who I am now or who I want to become, I just rip it out and replace it with one that does.
You can do that of course. And it works. It does remember the world is a mirror – it only reflects back to you why you believe what happened. Yes and sunglasses put away, I remembered what it was like to be a kid again. I quit assuming I knew everything, I knew all the answers and I feel free! Do you act like a kid? When you get older you’ll see that most grown-ups don’t think like me.
They take their beliefs very seriously. All righty. Is that why some gonna seem so sad? Maybe. Probably. I no wanna grow up. The problem in growing up, the problem is living your life by these beliefs you stole. Or should I say borrowed from others and thinking they are your own. Growing up is an amazing experience as long as you don’t take yourself too seriously. I promise.
